Sit tight and wait for the weather to improve, but if you’re that eager, see the jobs section!
  • Remove any snow from the branches of young trees so they don’t snap under the weight.
  • Prune any fruit trees you have around the garden.
  • Make plans for future expansion of your garden, whether landscaping or choosing what new shrubs to plant.
  • Leave out feed for birds such as sunflower seeds, peanuts and fatballs, all available from Hygeia’s Wild Bird Care range.
  • Prepare a diary to record your success & failures in the coming year.

Harvest time ...

  • Sow summer cabbage inside and broad beans outside
    near the end of the month.
  • Sow early carrots near the end of the month also.
  • If the weather is good, sow some summer flowers.
  • If you have rhubarb already planted, force it by covering a crown
    of rhubarb for eight weeks with a dustbin or large container. (This will encourage the rhubarb to grow earlier and will taste sweeter.)
  • Prune bushes, trees and other plants around the garden.
  • Aerate your lawn with a pitch fork.
  • While you are waiting for the growing season, make sure to clean the drains around your house
  • Use Mosgo on your patio, paths and drive to kill moss in that area.

  • Brussels sprouts, carrots (if you haven’t already), leek, onions, parsnips, shallots, radishes and most importantly potatoes.
  • Please ensure that you protect your crops from frost by covering with a fabric
  • Sow courgette indoors

  • Move summer cabbage outdoors

  • In mid May, move the Dwarf French beans, courgette, sweetcorn & runner bean outside and plant when conditions are good.
  • Move your tomatoes outside, (if you need to, make sure they are the outdoor variety otherwise leave indoors.)
  • Beetroot, sprouting broccoli, spinach, radishes, peas, winter cabbage & carrots.

  • Keep plants & shrubs well watered if dry.
  • To kill moss on tarmac, stone, concrete surfaces, slates & tiled roofs, use Mosgo.

  • Prune and clip evergreen hedges.
  • Ensure your roses are well fed with Hygeia Rose Food.

  • Rake your garden
  • Burn any diseased garden debris. (turn over a few times to ensure there are no hedgehogs in it preparing to hibernate.)
  • Select different products and feed from Hygeia’s Wild Bird Care range to ensure birds are well fed during the cold weather.
  • Onions, parsnips, radishes, Dwarf French beans, runner beans, beetroot, winter cabbage, carrots, Brussels sprouts, leeks, spinach, tomatoes, peas, garlic, leeks, courgettes & lettuce.
  • Consider storing your cabbage in a deep freezer for the winter so you can avail of it whenever you want.

  • Winter can be a good time to plant trees.
  • As the cold sets in, you can tidy and clean your garden.
  • Rake any debris up and clean out your garden shed.
  • Select different products and feed from Hygeia’s Wild Bird Care range to ensure birds are well fed during the cold weather.
  • Use Hygeia Bug Spray to remove any overcrowding aphids.
  • Parsnips, winter cabbage, Brussels sprouts & leeks.
