Choosing the best house plant for your home

Is your house looking a little dreary this new year now all the decorations have been taken down? Spring is on the way but with less to do in the garden this month, why not take some inspiration from this blog post on how to spruce up your home this January with a collection of house plants.

First, it is best to keep in mind that not all house plants were created equal. As with all rooms there may be bright, shaded or very hot areas that some plants may not appreciate. You must consider where is your plant going to live in?

LIVING ROOM

Monstera or Swiss Cheese House Plant

If it’s a slightly darker corner a good option would be a Monstera plant, also known as a Swiss Cheese plant. They feature a beautiful statement leaf that will offer a fabulous shine even in the darkest corner. Check them out here.

Spathiphyllum Sweet Silvio Peace Lilly

If you have somewhere with a little more light a nice option would be the is the Peace Lilly, also known as Spathiphyllum Sweet Silvio. An added benefit of having these in your home is they are an air purifier. Check them out here.

Orchid House Plant

Orchids are also another great option. They will reward you with 3-6 months of flowers and will sit beautifully in a group with multiple flowers of different colours.

BATHROOM

Ferns in your home

How do I create a mini rainforest in the bathroom? The answer is with ferns of course. These are a great option for decorating your bathroom as they like humidity and being moist. They also come in a wide variety of different shapes and sizes. Check them out here.

Sansevieria Plant

Another great option is a Sansevieria, also known as a snake plant. They are slow growing and come in various colours and most importantly they are hard to kill and like high humidity so there is no need to water them. Check them out here.

LIMITED SPACE

Succulents

If you are living in a smaller space and don’t have much room for house plants, fear not, there are still lots of options for you. Succulents are a great choice for when you don’t have room for larger plants and are very low maintenance.  Check them out here.

OFFICE

It is said that having plants in an office space can help boost mental wellbeing and increase productivity. But, if this space is an air conditioned environment with limited time for watering and maintaining, what options are there? Lots actually!

ZZ plants (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia)

ZZ plants (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia)

ZZ plants (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia) are very hardy and can take neglect. Check them out there.

Snake plants also don’t need much watering and will survive well on their own. Monstera will also do well if you have the space.

Plants naturally grow from March to September. If you feel that your plants are needing a nutrient boost post winter, try not to overdose them with water and check out the Nature Safe range from Hygeia.
